Olivier Mosset, born in 1944 in Bern and residing in Tucson, Arizona since 1996, has been a key figure in Radical Painting since the mid-1970s. This abstract-geometric approach gained prominence with the 1977 exhibition 'Radical Painting' in Williamstown, New York, which became a defining moment in art history. Central to this movement is the aim to challenge artistic originality through objectivity and seriality, prompting a reevaluation of the nature and function of painting. Mosset's diverse oeuvre includes monochrome and abstract-geometric works that intentionally avoid mystifying meanings. The accompanying exhibition and book showcase his work, featuring black circular rings, two-tone stripe paintings, stars, and monochrome canvases, all executed without distinct individual traits. Mosset's artistic journey began in 1962 in Paris, where he assisted Jean Tinguely and Daniel Spoerri. He later collaborated with Daniel Buren, Michel Parmentier, and Niele Toroni in a series of provocative actions in 1967, directly confronting Abstract Expressionism and the Nouvelle École de Paris. Together, they formed the group BMPT, named after their initials, but soon disbanded. Their efforts aimed to fundamentally challenge the established concepts of painting, seeking to create a new understanding that referred solely to itself.
