Set in June 1867, the narrative follows the promising young orator Alexander Kielland during his baccalaureate celebration at the University of Norway. His impressive speech and poised demeanor leave a lasting impression on attendees, predicting a bright future. However, a decade later, his life has taken a different turn; he remains largely unknown outside Stavanger. Kielland has transitioned from a law student and aspiring figure to a provincial manufacturer, seemingly destined for a conventional life as a local dignitary rather than a public intellectual.
