The Outfit

Set in 1886 Montana, the story follows Jake Lafarge, who, after being abandoned by his father, finds a father figure in cattleman Cyrus Ellsworth while working on a ranch. As the open range dwindles due to encroaching homesteaders, Ellsworth's harsh methods lead to a tragic confrontation when he catches cattle thieves. Jake becomes entangled in the aftermath, seeking to make amends to the widow of one of the deceased, forcing him to confront his loyalty to Ellsworth and the consequences of their actions.
