Tchaikovsky's composition, created for the Arts and Industry Exhibition, emerged between September and November 1880, celebrating Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812. Initially intended for a 1881 premiere, the exhibition was postponed due to Tsar Alexander II's assassination, leading to its debut on August 20, 1882, under conductor Ippolit Altani. Although Tchaikovsky expressed dissatisfaction with the piece, it quickly gained popularity, resulting in numerous performances shortly after its release.
