Focusing on the legal intricacies of claiming asylum, this study employs an anthropological lens to examine the significance of expert evidence from country specialists, including anthropologists. It explores how this evidence influences asylum assessments by the Home Office and adjudicators, while comparing the roles of social scientific and medical evidence in legal contexts. Drawing from extensive field observations, case law, and interviews with key legal figures, the work critically analyzes the application of concepts from the 1951 Refugee Convention, such as race and religion.
