Striking a Balance

Focusing on language management in Singapore, this study examines how language serves as a resource for national cohesion. It traces the evolution of Chinese and English from colonial times, highlighting their roles in education and literature, as well as the development of local speech varieties. Key government initiatives, such as the Speak Mandarin Campaign and the Speak Good English Movement, are analyzed within the context of educational reforms. The influence of Lee Kuan Yew on language policy and the importance of balancing diverse speech communities are central themes.
