Focusing on the evolution of social security in Chile, this study delves into its privatization during the Pinochet regime. It explores key historical periods, highlighting crises that prompted significant reforms in the socioeconomic structure and social security policies from 1924 onward. Borzutzky critiques the disparity between the positive global image of Chile's social security and the underlying political inequalities. She argues that attempts to realize a unified societal narrative threatened the regime, leading to the suppression of dissent and the promotion of individualism while perpetuating human rights abuses.
