Set in the summer of 1885, the story follows the first herd of trail cattle from Dodge City to the Northwest, led by seasoned drover Don Lovell. Amidst the journey, a serious accident occurs involving Quince Forrest, a member of the crew known for his reckless scuffles with his bunkmate. The narrative unfolds after a wayfaring man, who joins the trail outfit for a night, inadvertently endangers Forrest when he mistakenly reloads a pistol with six cartridges instead of five, leading to unforeseen consequences.
