Despite her early education at Vassar College, she turns to acting at 18, joining a traveling theatrical company led by her future husband, George Crichton Miln. Their marriage in 1888 leads to a difficult life in Australia, marked by poverty and struggle, especially after he departs for New Zealand, leaving her to care for their three young children in Sydney.
