Monk Lyman has discovered that even the apparently mundane city of San Antonio, Texas, contains a sleazy underworld ripe for exploitation. Witty, charming, but unemployed and without prospects, he keeps a loose affiliation of drug dealers and sex deviants as he bears the highs and lows of the down and out with bemused hedonism. This is the addict's journal of a spiritual quest for the "pure" fix of mind-altering chemicals and compassionate sex needed to appease a social anxiety disorder that makes Kafka look like Oprah. Appalling, hilarious, degenerate, and at times lyrical, this is a picaresque journey of redemption as the narrator tries to stay one step ahead of both the cops and death by overdose.
