Geology of the Middle Atlantic Islands

Více o knize

This work explores islands that have long been known, even before tourism popularized them. Among the vast Atlantic archipelagoes, none have captivated adventurers, scholars, and travelers quite like these. The motivations for visiting vary, yet all who have experienced these islands share a common enthusiasm for their unique allure, whether for profit, knowledge, or leisure. While travel brochures should be approached with skepticism, the natural attractions of climate, seascape, and landscape are often accurately represented. Since Gagel's 1910 and von Wolff's 1931 publications, no comprehensive work on the geology of these Middle Atlantic islands has emerged. In the past 45 years, significant new geological knowledge has been acquired, as indicated by the bibliography. The interest in geological and geophysical studies is growing, with numerous projects underway by various institutions. This book aims to condense 170 years of geological research into a manageable volume, emphasizing the volcanic nature of these islands. While the literature heavily focuses on the petrography and chemistry of igneous rocks, the author strives to present a balanced overview that includes other geological aspects. Geophysical and geochronological studies are beginning to develop, and the global tectonic perspective is increasingly relevant, despite some proposals appearing somewhat biased.
