Vom Gouverneur Sir Charles McCarthy erhält er den Auftrag, die Gebiete des heutigen Staates Sierra Leone nach Handelsmöglichkeiten zu erkunden und besser auszukundschaften. Bei seiner Erkundung der Länder der Mandinkas, Timannis den heutigen Temne und Kurankos gelingt es ihm die Quelle des Rokel, des größten Flusses Sierra Leones, zu bestimmen.
