1868 brach Wilhelm Reiss, Vulkanologe und Forschungsreisender, gemeinsam mit seinem Kollegen Alphons Stübel zu einer Expedition nach Amerika auf. Ihr ursprüngliches Ziel war Hawaii, allerdings erlagen sie bei einem Zwischenstopp in Kolumbien derart der Faszination der Anden, dass sie beschlossen, sich eingehend deren Erforschung zu widmen. In den folgenden fünf Jahren bereisten die Beiden den halben Kontinent, von Kolumbien über Ecuador und Peru bis nach Brasilien, erklommen dabei mehrere Vulkane und fuhren den Amazonas hinab. 1876 kehrte Wilhelm Reiss schließlich nach Europa zurück. Eines der vielen Ergebnisse der langjährigen Reise ist ein packender Erlebnisbericht, reich an ethnographischen, geologischen und archäologischen Beobachtungen, der nun, 100 Jahre nach seinem Ersterscheinen, wieder bei Duncker & Humblot erhältlich ist.
