Josif Brodskij je znám jako virtuóz klasické veršové formy, kterou modernizoval a dovedl až na hranici jejích možností. A přece je v jeho díle několik pozoruhodných básní, zcela rezignujících na klasický verš, jako by autora vlastní mistrovství chvílemi unavovalo a chtěl to zkusit úplně jinak. Není jich mnoho, necelá dvacítka, v tomto svazku zahrnutá v úplnosti. Výbor navazuje na dvě předchozí sbírky Josifa Brodského vydané nakladatelstvím Opus – Římské elegie (2004) a Benátské strofy (2013). Přeložila Maita Arnautová.
Cyklus dvanácti básní Římské elegie, vydaný v roce 1982 v New Yorku patří svou sevřeností, výrazovou ukázněností, originalitou obrazného vidění i mistrovskou prací s tónickým veršem a s rýmy k vrcholům Brodského básnické tvorby. Josif Brodskij neboli Joseph Brodsky (24. 5. 1940 - 28. 1. 1996), ruský básník, překladatel a esejista a americký občan, patří k těm umělcům, pro které se nucená emigrace stala pravým dobrodiním: nejen proto, že mu dopomohla ke světové proslulosti a k Nobelově ceně za literaturu (v roce 1987), ale především proto, že díky ní se mu podařilo dosáhnout jedinečné syntézy jen vzácně slučitelných prvků - vysoce formálně vytříbené ruské básnické kultury a hodnotově vyzrálého anglosaského ducha, obojí vnímané prizmatem židovské senzibility.
Další dvojjazyčné vydání (po Římských elegiích v r. 2004) veršů J. Brodského, nositele Nobelovy ceny z r. 1987. Benátské strofy, malý cyklus básní z roku 1982, patří do vrcholného autorova tvůrčího období. Po nuceném opuštění Ruska se usadil v New Yorku, přednášel na univerzitě o literatuře a zimní prázdniny mezi dvěma semestry trávil pravidelně v Benátkách; připomínaly mu v tomto chladném ročním období jiné město na vodě, jeho rodný Leningrad (Petrohrad), ale ve starobylejší podobě, hluboko zakořeněné v historii, kultuře i mytologii a zároveň otevřené celému světu. Benátky ho fascinovaly jako magické, nostalgické, mnohoznačné místo, kde je možné všechno. Přeložila Maita Arnautová.

Mluví o sobě, ale způsobem, který čtenáři umožňuje osobní prožitek vztažený k jeho vlastnímu životu.
Avšak bez ohledu na hlavní téma lze text číst i jako obecnou úvahu – o psaní, paměti, zraku, slzách a vnímání, o lidské civilizaci, únavě, konečnosti věcí i života, o kráse, strachu, instinktech, tvorbě, o štěstí, dokonalosti, povrchu, pohybu, o tvářích, moři, zrůdnosti, obrazech, divadle a labyrintech.

Um im Exil nicht zu verstummen, wurde es für Joseph Brodsky nach seiner Ausbürgerung 1972 lebensnotwendig, sich an die Orte seiner Jugend zu erinnern. Entstanden ist dabei eine Liebeserklärung an Petersburg, in der die Stadt am Meer so lebendig und anschaulich gefeiert wird wie selten zuvor.

His insights into the works of Dostoyevsky, Mandelstam, Platonov, as well as non-Russian poets Auden, Cavafy and Montale are brilliant. While the Western popularity of many other Third Wavers has been stunted by their inability to write in English, Brodsky consumed the language to attain a "closer proximity" to poets such as Auden.
