Dr Glynn Sharplin is the scientist in charge of developing the Version combat drone army, the direct advancement of the original pilot series that were engineered to create portals in order to traverse the vast distances between worlds. As they are deployed to replace an entire work force it becomes apparent that the Version - designed to protect the nation of Prospect - may yet have a dual purpose. Ologun Jowett returns to a world in desperation as humanity is on the fringe of extinction. A fourth world war seems imminent and Ologun intervenes in the only way he knows how.

Between morality and reality, what will a man choose when all he knows is brutality? 2256: Ologun Jowett is convicted of carrying out a massacre and sent to the planet Deceiver to labour in its deep-sea mining facilities. He arrives as the planet undergoes a catastrophic ice age due to the appearance of ‘God’s Blade’ – a colossal fragment of unknown origin which has come to rest midway between Deceiver and its sun. 2338: Captain Frank Sharplin is the caretaker of Black Ball – the outpost established on God’s Blade – a non-taxing appointment as steward of what had once been a bustling city but is now little more than a tourist resort. His peaceful life is shattered when a transport is discovered under the ice on Deceiver. To his amazement, one of the passengers – Ologun – revives and life on Black Ball takes some unexpected turns. The peace of Black Ball is shattered when IMC ships arrive and commence battle – with each other. Soldiers invade and the inhabitants run for their lives, desperate to find an escape. More mysteries ensue. How does Ologun survive his horrific injuries? And what is his mission? Can Sharplin overcome his passive nature and save the lives of those in his care? What is the Prospect Division planning? And who are the ‘people’ who resist them? Who or what is the mysterious Spectra?
