The internationally renowned artist Sean Scully (*1945) is known above all for his abstract, expressively painted works. The artist creates large-format paintings with an intense application of color and rough brushstrokes; he often has checkered or striped patterns emerge, thus reproducing the aesthetic of geometric minimalism. In the planned exhibition at the Albertina, Sean Scully: Eleuthera, Sean Scully and his art will be shown from a much more private side. At the center of the exhibition is the “Eleuthera” series from the years 2016–17, in which Scully examines a very familiar topic. The series consists of twenty-five large-format oil paintings depicting Oisín, the artist’s seven-year-old son, playing on the beach of Eleuthera, an island in the Bahamas. The accompanying publication presents this new group of works for the first time.

Werner Spies (b. 1937), teacher, critic, curator of major international exhibitions, and close friend to many major artists, has always had an open eye and mind. His critical appraisals of trends in both Europe and the United States continue to stimulate art lovers around the globe.  Spies's collected writings first appeared in German in 2008, and sold out immediately. Now these 10 volumes, beautifully printed with over 1,400 color illustrations and presented in a slipcase designed by Andreas Gursky, are being made available in English for the first time. The subjects addressed include Picasso, Ernst, Pop and Op Art, Surrealism, and much more. In their wealth of detail, and in their reflection of personal encounters and impressions, Spies's writings constitute an important resource on modern art.

Richard Lindner, a German-born refugee from Nazi oppression who settled in New York, created a deeply disturbing body of work completely at odds with that city's vanguard of the 1950s. A former commercial artist, Lindner drew on personal iconography and his European cultural heritage to fashion bright, bizarre images of imaginary figures. Grotesque children, automaton couples, and denizens of the urban underworld populate his canvases. Often hailed as a precursor of Pop Art, Lindner insisted that his was the art of an outsider, that he was a "man born between generations; between the Dadaists and the more recent generation of Americans." The situation of the emigre inspired Lindner's paintings, which speak to the alienation and moral crises of this century and evoke the absurdity of the human condition. Although best known for his striking images of intimidating femmes fatales, Lindner consistently denied that his art was either erotic or misogynistic in intent. The elusive character of his symbolism presents a challenge to conventional art criticism and historical scholarship.
