Ve stínu ohromujícího domácího triumfu se však Adolf Hitler systematicky připravoval na realizaci své největší ambice: rozšíření německého „životního prostoru“, jehož motorem mělo být surové ovládnutí východní Evropy a fanatický rasismus. Prostředkem a stvrzením velikosti tohoto snu se měla stát – válka.Druhý díl zachycuje období let 1940–1945. Profesor McDonough dokazuje, že navzdory Hitlerovým velkolepým plánům a počátečním válečným úspěchům se Německo nikdy nestalo opravdovou supervelmocí a nemělo šanci uspět proti jednotně sešikovaným Spojencům. Druhý díl sleduje Hitlerova vojenská vítězství i nelidské vraždění na dobytých územích stejně jako následný obrat na bitevním poli a cestu k definitivní porážce německého nacionálního socialismu.

Otevírá se mu tak široké panorama každodenního fungování jednoho z hlavních nástrojů represe a současně je konfrontován s příběhy hrdinství a vzdoru, ale i mnoha lidských tragédií, tak jak je autor získal pečlivým studiem mnoha osobních svazků.
