Román jednoho z nejlepších současných holandských spisovatelů z roku 1980 je zasvěcen rituálům každodenního života, jež mají lidem umožnit životní rovnováhu a smysl. Děj se odehrává ve třech epizodách ze života hlavní postavy Inniho Wintropa, člověka bez řádu, který se živí psaním horoskopů, sledováním vývoje na burze a občasným obchodem s uměleckými předměty. On i lidé, s nimiž se setkává, nedokáží a nechtějí dát svému životu žádnou pevnou formu, zároveň se však obávají chaosu. Ztrátu náboženské víry se pokoušejí nahradit každý po svém; u hlavního hrdiny se vyznáním, praktikovaným s rituální důsledností, stávají ženy. Východisko, které tak nabízí, je typickým kompromisem člověka konce našeho století: strach před životem v chaosu a beze smyslu stejně jako před všemi zákony a dogmaty.

Alma a Almut, dvě mladé Brazilky s německými předky, přijíždějí do Austrálie, kde má Alma překonat trauma nedávného znásilnění; během pobytu prožije milostné dobrodružství s domorodým malířem, zároveň však cítí, že jeho vnitřní svět jí zůstává navždy uzavřen. V Perthu se pak obě dívky zúčastní literárního happeningu na počest Miltonova Ztraceného ráje, jehož účastníci vyhledávají figuranty převlečené za anděly a ukryté na různých místech po městě. Ve druhé části knihy se nizozemský literární kritik Erik Zondag během ozdravného pobytu v Rakousku, který mu má pomoci překonat krizi středního věku, setkává s masérkou, s níž tři roky předtím prožil „andělskou“ epizodu v Perthu, návrat intenzivního prožitku a skutečné setkání jsou však i tentokrát nemožné… Jeden z mistrů současné nizozemské literatury rozehrává ve své poslední próze fascinující hru plnou skrytých souvislostí a variací na miltonovské téma, čtenáře však upoutá i přesnými postřehy ze života literárních kruhů, stručným, ale výstižným popisem prostředí i suverenitou, s níž konstruuje myšlenkově a významově bohatý svět svého díla.

Následující příběh, který poprvé v Holandsku vyšel roku 1991, je příběhem bývalého středoškolského učitele latiny a starého mládence Hermanna Musserta, žáky přezdívaného Sokrates, jehož největší vášní je studium klasických textů a jazyků. První odstavce románu nás přenášejí do Lisabonu, kde se jednoho rána hrdina probouzí jako autor cestopisných průvodců, vydávaných pod pseudonymem dr. Strab.
