Frantz Fanon (1925-1961) patří mezi průkopníky post-koloniálních studií a kritické teorie. Jeho rodina žijící na Martiniku měla africko-indicko evropské kořeny. Fanon vystudoval psychiatrii, dále studoval také literaturu a filosofii, byl členem alžírské Fronty Národního Osvobození. Černá kůže, bílé masky je základním dílem zabývajícím se dekolonizací poválečného třetího světa (zvláště Severní Africe kde žil, a kde se aktivně účastnil alžírského boje o nezávislost). Fanon sugestivním, ale někdy až lékařsky chladným způsobem rozebírá funkci rasy, národní a kulturní identity a koloniální nadřazenosti v sebeidentifikaci nových post-koloniálních zemích. Tato kniha je dodnes aktuální nejen jako historický pramen, ale pro postkomunistické státy otevírá v rovině národní imaginace možnost nahlédnout vlastní poválečnou minulost jako koloniální a posléze post-koloniální proces.
