V roce 1944 byl osvobozen Rudou armádou a dva roky nato emigroval do Izraele (tehdejší Palestiny). Vydal na dvacet knih včetně titulů Badenhein 1939, The Immortal Bartfuss (Nesmrtelný Bartfuss), The Age of Wonders (Věk divů), Katerina (Kateřina), The Railway (Železnice), All That I Have Loved (Vše, co jsem miloval ) a The Story of a Life: A Memoir (Příběh života) za kterou získal francouzskou cenu Prix Médicis.
