Hochhuth je německý dramatik a významný iniciátor dokumentárního divadla. Mezinárodní úspěch mu přineslo dílo „Der Stellvertreter“. Opakovaně se zabývá nacistickou minulostí a aktuálními politickými a sociálními otázkami. Od šedesátých let se ve svých otevřených dopisech snažil ovlivňovat politiku.
Divadelní hra, která vyvolala světovou pozornost, je založena na dokumentárním materiálu a obírá se problémem papežova postoje k pronásledování židů za druhé světové války. Knižní vydání je opatřeno "historickými záběry", doslovem, v němž sám autor velmi podrobně vysvětluje, "jaké- často těžce dostupné - prameny jej přiměly k tomu, aby viděl některého člověka, nějakou scénu v tom či onom světle".
