Was ist Stadtökologie? Was wissen wir über die Natur in der Stadt und wie lassen sich Städte ökologisch gliedern? Welche Rolle spielen Klima, Wasserhaushalt und Boden im urbanen Raum? Welche Pflanzen und Tiere haben sich besonders gut an das Stadtleben angepasst? Wie greifen Stadtbewohner gewollt oder ungewollt in die natürlichen Wechselbeziehungen ein? Welche Bedeutung kommt der Stadtplanung zu und mit welchen Herausforderungen des globalen Wandels müssen Städte zunehmend umgehen? Diese und andere Grundfragen des urbanen Mensch- Umwelt-Systems werden vom Autor ausführlich und anschaulich erläutert. Merksätze in der Randspalte fassen die wichtigsten Inhalte und Erkenntnisse prägnant zusammen, zahlreiche Abbildungen und Tabellen illustrieren die Sachverhalte und erleichtern das Verständnis. Die Belastung der städtischen Atmosphäre mit Partikeln stellt derzeit eines der wichtigsten Probleme der Luftreinhaltung dar. In diesem Projekt wurden verschiedene innerstädtische Oberflächentypen auf ihre Fähigkeit hin untersucht, PM10-Partikel zu binden und somit die lokale Luftqualität zu verbessern. Die Quantifizierung des PM10-Bindungsvermögens erfolgte mittels der Depositionsgeschwindigkeit. Diese wurden über die Antimon-Konzentrationen im PM10 und in der trockenen Deposition bestimmt.

This book gives an interdisciplinary overview on urban ecology. Basic understanding of urban nature development and its social reception are discussed for the European Metropolitan Area of Berlin. Furthermore, we investigate specific consequences for the environment, nature and the quality of life for city dwellers due to profound changes such as climate change and the demographic and economic developments associated with the phenomena of shrinking cities. Actual problems of urban ecology should be discussed not only in terms of natural dimensions such as atmosphere, biosphere, pedosphere and hydrosphere but also in terms of social and cultural dimensions such as urban planning, residence and recreation, traffic and mobility and economic values. Our research findings focus on streets, new urban landscapes, intermediate use of brown fields and the relationships between urban nature and the well-being of city dwellers. Finally, the book provides a contribution to the international discussion on urban ecology.

Climate change is one of the most pressing global problems of our time. Humanity faces serious challenges, particularly regarding the reduction of CO2 emissions. Leading climate change researchers report on their observations of the effects of climate change in Europe, Asia, Africa, America, Australia and the Polar Regions. The latest climatic data is evaluated from both global and regional points of view and simulations of future developments are discussed. The contributions offer a well-researched picture of the changes in our climate that are already taking place around the world or which will take place in the future, and examine the consequences for the environment, society and the economy. The “Continents under Climate Change” conference was organised by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina – National Academy of Sciences as part of the 200th anniversary celebrations of the Humboldt University in Berlin.
