Románová prvotina anglického spisovatele (básníka, romanopisce a dramatika), která získala autorovi přední místo nejen v současné anglické, ale i ve světové tvorbě. Román, který autor (jako všechny své prózy) nazývá bájí nebo mýtem a pro který autor doslovu navrhuje termín symbolické podobenství. Příběh zasazený do utopistického rámce ne příliš vzdálené budoucnosti. Na pustém ostrově se zachrání část chlapců, kteří byli při letecké evakuaci z atomicky zasažené Británie vojensky napadeni. Chlapci čekají na vysvobození a pokoušejí se žít v nějaké životaschopné organizaci. Nejprve si vybudují jakousi ideální společnost na základě demokratických principů, vštípených rodinou a školou, ale vše se začne hroutit, jakmile je třeba, aby se vydělili „lovci“ symbolizující barbarskou živočišnou touhu po krvi. Autor zde předvádí svou vizi společnosti a odvěký svár dobra se zlem v lidském nitru.

Román „Věž“ se odehrává ve středověku, zřejmě ve 14. století, a dějištěm je podle všeho Salisbury, kde Golding sám dosti dlouho působil jako učitel. Jedním z podnětů k napsání tohoto románu byla zřejmě stará legenda o stavbě salisburské katedrály. Podle ní se biskupu Poorovi někdy okolo roku 1200, když jednou stál na výšině a pohlížel na soutok dvou řek, zjevila Matka Boží a řekla mu, aby vystřelil z luku a aby jí na tom místě, kam padne šíp, postavil kostel. Šíp padl doprostřed močálů a tam byla také katedrála postavena, bez ohledu na nezdravý terén a obtíže všeho druhu. Asi za osmdesát let po tom byla na tuto stavbu přistavěna nejvyšší věž v celé zemi, velmi těžká, která se naklání a chvěje, přesto ale dosud stojí.

Ztroskotání Christophera Martina je v pořadí třetí Goldingovo dílo, v němž autor využil své válečné zkušenosti ze služby na křižnících, minolovkách a torpédoborcích (účastnil se i operace proti německému křižníku Bismarck). Tak jako Pán much či Dědicové, ani tato kniha není běžným románem, ale symbolickým podobenstvím, bájí, mýtickým příběhem. V tomto případě Golding téma smrti, hříchu a konečného soudu zpracovává na prostém příběhu námořníka, který na nehostinném skalnatém útesu „přežil“ torpédování své lodi německou ponorkou. Jako všechny Goldingovy romány i Ztroskotání Christophera Martina nabízí více otázek než odpovědí. Zde navíc originální „Goldingův trik“ v závěru knihy narušuje již tak nejednoznačné vyznění příběhu a nutí nás opakovaně se zamýšlet nad Martinovým osudem a zároveň podrobit důkladnému zkoumání i náš vlastní život.

Životní příběh mladičké, nehezké venkovské dívky, kterou – protože není schopna najít ženicha – rodiče dají do Delf, kde se stane nejdříve služkou a společnicí věštkyň a nakonec se sama stává Pythií. Líčení duševního stavu, který předchází samotnému věštění, mluvení „druhým jazykem“ – to jsou podstatné části románu, kde se autor zamýšlí nad věšteckou rutinou, kterou Delfy představovaly. Wolfgang Held, geboren am 15. August 1933 in Freiburg im Breisgau, war Schriftsteller, Übersetzer und Pianist. Er promovierte 1961 über Georg Trakl und arbeitete von 1961 bis 1973 als Lektor für den Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst (DAAD) an Universitäten in Madras, Ljubljana und Edinburgh. Anschließend wurde er Senior Lecturer an der Greenwich University in London, wo er bis zu seinem Tod 2016 lebte. Sein literarisches Werk umfasst Romane, Essays sowie Prosa- und Gedichtübersetzungen, beginnend mit „Die im Glashaus“ (1965) bis hin zu „Schattenfabel“ (2014). Zu seinen weiteren Romanen zählen „Die schöne Gärtnerin“ (1979), „Rabenkind“ (1985) und „Traum vom Hungerturm“ (2007). Held erhielt Anerkennung durch Einladungen zu literarischen Veranstaltungen und den Literaturpreis des Kulturkreises (1983). Seine Übersetzungen für Suhrkamp brachten bedeutende englische und irische Autoren wie Samuel Beckett und T. S. Eliot einem breiteren deutschen Publikum näher. Sein Theaterstück „Hoffmanns Verbrennung“ wurde 2015 uraufgeführt und mit Collagen aus seinem Hoffmann-Zyklus kombiniert.
