John Keats byl jedním z hlavních básníků anglického romantického hnutí. Během svého krátkého života se jeho dílo setkávalo s neustálými kritickými útoky dobových periodik, ale jeho posmrtný vliv na básníky, jako byl Alfred Tennyson, byl nesmírný. Keatsovu poezii charakterizuje propracovaná volba slov a smyslové obrazy, včetně série „śląských“ básní, které byly jeho mistrovskými díly a zůstávají mezi nejoblíbenějšími básněmi v anglické literatuře. Keatsovy dopisy, které rozvádějí jeho estetickou teorii „negativní schopnosti“, patří mezi nejslavnější od jakéhokoli spisovatele.
Verše anglických básníků Wordswortha, Keatse a Shelleyho vybrala a přeložila Jarmila Urbánková, která také napsala úvod, medailonky a poznámky.

Bohatá, thematicky pestrá a ideově i formálně pozoruhodná poesie anglického básníka Johna Ketse, příslušníka mladší romantické generace, je u nás známa pouze z ojedinělých starých překladů (např. Vrchlický, Sládek, Klášterský) a pak z prvního širšího výboru přeloženého Františkem Bíblem r. 1928. Náš nynější výbor se snaží seznámit čtenáře v průřezu s jeho nejlepší tvorbou, ať jsou to lyrické sonety a ódy, vynikající krásou myšlenek, precisní formou a hudebností verše, nebo mistrně propracovaná básnická povídka "Předvěčer sv. Anežky" či směle pojatá epická skladba "Hyperion", kde pod pláštíkem mythologického příběhu vyslovuje autor své demokratické přesvědčení a oslavuje vítězství Velké francouzské revoluce nad feudálním absolutismem. Keatsovo jméno se v dějinách literatury vyslovuje takřka jedním dechem se jmény revolučních romantiků Byrona a Shelleyho, a právem. Keats má totiž s těmito básniky spočný nejen mimořádný talent, ale i demokratické přesvědčení a kritický postoj k soudobé skutečnosti. Nebylo mu bohužel dopřáno, aby dlouho tvořil, ale i tak světu zanechal velký, čistý, horoucí básnický odkaz.
Výbor uspořádala, přeložila a poznámkami opatřila Hana Žantovská. Doslov napsal Martin Hilský.
