Guidobaldo Marquis del Monte has long been identified as a key figure in the history of the mathematical disciplines in the Renaissance. The contributions brought together in this volume examine all the key aspects of the Marquis del Monte s activities, ranging from mechanics and the science of perspective to architecture and geometry. Some of the essays provide intellectual analyses of Guidobaldo's works, including their significance and reception, others document his activities in the design of mathematical instruments, in civil and military architecture, and in his professional travels and contacts with Galileo. Many of the contributions rely on archival research shedding new light on his activities. As a result, Guidobaldo appears in a new light and as a key figure not only in the Duchy of Urbino but also on the Italian and European stage.

The history of mechanics, and more particularly, the history of mechanics applied to constructions, constitutes a field of research that is relatively recent. This volume, together with the recent publication „Towards a History of Construction“, is intended as an homage to the two eminent scholars who made a determinant contribution to the history of mechanics: Edoardo Benvenuto and Clifford Truesdell.

This volume commemorates the life of Edoardo Benvenuto, in recognition of his great devotion to his work both as a teacher and researcher. This volume contains papers from scholars of science, engineering, mathematics and architecture, presenting the results of their research.

Nelle pagine dedicate a Leonardo nelle note, l'a. riprende la ricostruzione storiografia proposta da Duhem, secondo il quale molti degli spunti più originali presenti nelle Exercitationes deriverebbero dalla conoscenza, diretta e indiretta,dei manoscritti di Leonardo; la fragilità di questa congettura viene ridiscussa alla luce dei temi meccanici qui considerati.
