This volume contains the proceedings of the IFIP WG 6.1 International Working Conference on Distributed Applications and Interoperable Systems VI, held in Bologna, Italy, from June 14-16, 2006. The conference showcases cutting-edge research on distributed and interoperable systems, which have become integral to everyday computing. The advent of new communication technologies has led to diverse application areas, including mobile computing, inter-enterprise collaborations, and ubiquitous services. Key challenges addressed include the need for service-oriented architectures, autonomous systems, peer-to-peer systems, grid computing, sensor networks, and enhancements in adaptability and dynamism of distribution constellations. DAIS 2006 emphasizes architectures, models, technologies, and platforms that support interoperable, scalable, and adaptable systems, aligning with trends toward service orientation and self-properties. The presented papers explore methodological aspects, tools for building adaptable distributed services, fault tolerance, peer-to-peer systems, mobility, web services performance, semantic integration, and context-aware applications. Additionally, an invited paper by Jan Bosch and colleagues from Nokia Research Center discusses the conflict between usability and architectural drivers influencing the success or failure of mobile services.
