„Sports nutrition is a constantly evolving field with hundreds of research papers published annually” (Kreider et al., 2010). Since the release of the second edition of “Top-Leistung im Sport durch bedürfnisgerechte Ernährung” in 2005, the number of scientific publications on sports nutrition has exponentially increased. This work aims to sift through the vast amount of information and present the current knowledge in a clear and compact manner. Evidence of the nutritional challenges in sports is highlighted by the study “Ernährungsverhalten von Ultraläufern bei einem Mehretappenlauf – Isarrun 2006” by Knechtle et al. (2006), which found that ultrarunners did not adhere to a carbohydrate-rich diet before races but preferred carbohydrate-rich foods during and after stages. The nutrition recommendations target competitive athletes and recreational athletes who require more energy than casual exercisers but less than extreme athletes. The guidance is applicable to individuals engaging in one to three hours of daily sports and participating in competitions. It also addresses the increased nutrient needs of growing children and adolescents, emphasizing that their energy and fluid requirements are higher than those of adults.
