José Rafael Moneo, born in 1937 in Tudela, Navarra, earned his architectural degree in 1961 from ETSAM in Madrid, where he initially worked with Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza. After graduation, he joined Jørn Utzon in Denmark. Moneo served as chairman of the architecture department at Harvard University from 1984 to 1990. His accolades include gold medals from the French Academy of Architecture and the International Union of Architects, the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize, and Spain’s Gold Medal for Achievement in the Arts. He received the Pritzker Prize in 1996 and the British Royal Medal of Architecture in 2003. Mohsen Mostafavi described him as the embodiment of the Renaissance architect—practitioner, teacher, theorist, and critic. Moneo's influence is evident in Spain through projects like the Seville airport, Madrid's high-speed-train station, the National Bank of Spain, and the Museo del Prado, showcasing his commitment to Spanish culture and architectural history. Internationally, he has designed notable structures such as the Davis Museum in Massachusetts, the Audrey Jones Beck Building in Texas, and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, which attracted over a million visitors in its first year. Juan Antonio Cortés, with a doctorate from ETSAM, teaches at ETSAV, while Duccio Malagamba, initially an architect, shifted to architectural photography after working with renowned architects.
