The development of new ventilation methods and varying marketing strategies from manufacturers complicate the establishment of clear criteria for comparing ventilation modes and parameters. This challenge is particularly evident when patients requiring ventilatory support are first admitted or when staff transition to a new ICU, as users often struggle to correlate clinical scenarios with the appropriate breathing patterns. This difficulty can hinder the application of correct settings. While the American nomenclature is frequently deemed inadequate for classifying closed-loop modes, a standardized German or European framework remains absent. The Kronberg List aims to navigate the complexities of ventilation modes, serving as a quick reference for bedside decision-making. It includes comparison tables that highlight differences among manufacturers' devices and provide detailed descriptions of relevant characteristics, facilitating easier comparisons of ventilation methods. The new edition has been thoroughly revised and expanded, incorporating the classification developed by Robert L. Chatburn, which is now also utilized by the ECRI (formerly Emergency Care Research Institute) for describing and comparing ventilators.
