Poor White

Set in a dismal town along the Mississippi River, the story follows Hugh McVey, born into a community plagued by poverty and despair. The land, known as "Mudcat Landing," is largely unproductive, inhabited by weary men and struggling merchants who face constant financial hardship. The only thriving establishments are the saloons, where townsfolk find temporary solace in alcohol amidst their bleak existence. This backdrop highlights themes of resilience and the impact of environment on the human spirit.
