Born in 1707, Henry Fielding's early life in Somerset and Dorset shaped his journey into a prolific literary career, marked by sharp political satire. His plays sparked controversy, leading to the Theatrical Licensing Act of 1737, which stifled dissenting voices. Transitioning to law, he became a barrister and married Charlotte Craddock, who inspired characters in his novels. Fielding's notable works include the parody Shamela and the acclaimed picaresque novel Tom Jones. Despite health struggles, he remained committed to justice and co-founded the Bow Street Runners before his death in 1754.
