Notable for his work in both science fiction and fantasy, he created acclaimed series such as the Polesotechnic League and the Terran Empire, featuring the character Dominic Flandry. Collaborating with his wife Karen, he also penned the fantasy Kingdoms of Ys series. His literary achievements earned him seven Hugo Awards, three Nebula Awards, and the prestigious SFWA Grandmaster Award before his passing in 2001.
