Straw Hats and Serge Bloomers

As the world was entering the 1920's, with the promise of peace on earth and a world fit for heroes, Eileen Elias was entering her teens, her loyalties divided between the serge bloomers of school and the brave new world of short skirts, silk stockings and the Charleston. We follow the uncertain progress of her growing-up in a decade which saw the death of Lenin, the last days of the British Empire and a General Strike which brought Britain close to revolution.
