In a dystopian world controlled by the corporation Caerus, which thrives on the debt of the underclass, Inesa struggles to survive with her brother in a half-sunken town where they run a taxidermy shop. Unbeknownst to her, their mother has accrued a massive debt that puts Inesa in danger of being selected for the brutal livestreamed assassination event known as the Lamb's Gauntlet. Melinoë, a skilled assassin created through neural reconditioning and physiological alteration, has never failed in her missions. However, after a traumatic experience during her last Gauntlet, she seeks redemption. When Inesa learns of her mother's betrayal, she initially feels hopeless, knowing the Gauntlet is a deadly spectacle for the impoverished. Yet, her survival skills and her brother's support give her a fighting chance. As Melinoë tracks Inesa across the wasteland, both young women confront their pasts and question their identities. Inesa seeks a life beyond mere survival, while Mel grapples with her capacity for compassion over brutality. Amidst the chaos, an unexpected bond forms, leading them to wonder if love can flourish in a world designed for sacrifice.
