    Šen Tchaj je synem generála, který před dvaceti lety vedl vojska Kithájského císařství do poslední války proti jejich západním nepřátelům z Taguru. U odlehlého horského jezera tehdy padlo v bitvě čtyřicet tisíc mužů z obou stran. Sám generál Šen Kao zemřel nedávno. Tchaj chtěl uctít jeho památku, a tak strávil dva roky o samotě, obřadným oplakáváním otce na někdejším bojišti, mezi duchy padlých, a přitom ukládal nepohřbené kosti vojáků k odpočinku. Jednoho jarního rána se dozvěděl, že jeho čin nezůstal bez povšimnutí. Bílá jadeitová princezna z Taguru mu poslala dvě stě padesát sardských koní a doprovodný list, v němž píše, že dar je oceněním jeho odvahy a toho, jak uctil mrtvé. Když někomu dáte jednoho z proslulých sardských koní, je to veliká pocta. Když mu jich dáte pět nebo šest, pozvednete ho nad ostatní a přinesete mu žárlivost a závist, ba možná i smrtelné nebezpečí. Dvě stě padesát, to je nepředstavitelný dar, který by byl snad příliš i pro císaře. Tchaj se vydává k východu, k oslnivému, nebezpečnému císařskému sídelnímu městu, a od osamělosti u horského jezera se vrací zpět ke svému životu, který je však provždy změněn.
