Par ailleurs, pas plus que chez Graham Greene à qui on l'a souvent comparé, il n'y a d'emphase religieuse ou d'esquisses ou d'esquives moralisantes, quoique le sujet s'y prête. Le message inhérent joue non par autorité (d'auteurs) mais par influence (provenant du for intérieur du lecteur). Réflexif.

    Děj napínavého románu se odehrává v současnosti, koncem druhého tisíciletí. Papež Lev XIV., fiktivní postava, má v poměrně pokročilém věku podstoupit operaci srdce. Profesor Sergio Salviati, italský Žid, jej seznamuje s možnými riziky, mezi něž zahrnuje i psychický dopad na pacienta. Papež má vznětlivou povahu, přehlíží krizi katolické církve, nevidí její znamení: odliv věřících, nedostatek mladých kněží, ignorování palčivých otázek jako je kontrola porodnosti, celibát kněží, postavení žen v církvi. Během příprav na operaci se profesorův přítel, velvyslanec Izraele v Římě, dozvídá, že arabská teroristická skupina Meč islámu chystá na papeže atentát. Agenti Mossadu zatknou jednu ze sester na klinice, původem Arabku. Teroristé se však nevzdávají svého úmyslu a navíc se chtějí mstít za její únos. Vyhrožují, že unesou psycholožku, která žije s profesorem Salviatim a pomáhá papeži překonat pooperační psychickou krizi. Díky její laskavé péči zažívá papež vnitřní obrodu, začíná chápat potřebu reforem v církvi. Připravuje proslov na důležité zasedání konzistoře, po němž následuje slavnostní mše v Bazilice svatého Petra.na vyvýšeném místě, mezi mnoha jinými filmaři, natáčejí obřad také Japonci.
