Děj napínavého románu se odehrává v současnosti, koncem druhého tisíciletí. Papež Lev XIV., fiktivní postava, má v poměrně pokročilém věku podstoupit operaci srdce. Profesor Sergio Salviati, italský Žid, jej seznamuje s možnými riziky, mezi něž zahrnuje i psychický dopad na pacienta. Papež má vznětlivou povahu, přehlíží krizi katolické církve, nevidí její znamení: odliv věřících, nedostatek mladých kněží, ignorování palčivých otázek jako je kontrola porodnosti, celibát kněží, postavení žen v církvi.
