This book explores the history of East Central Europe from the late eighteenth century, a region often challenging to define due to its complex boundaries and diverse nations. Connelly emphasizes that, despite linguistic, geographic, and political divisions, the peoples of this area shared a common experience. The narrative begins in the 1780s with Habsburg monarch Joseph II, who mandated the use of German in hopes of fostering a unified nationality. Instead, this decree ignited nationalistic movements among smaller groups striving for independence from empires. The author illustrates how the national self-assertion that emerged during imperial rule in the 18th and 19th centuries laid the groundwork for the region's subsequent history, including the formation of nation-states after World War I, the challenges of democratic governance during the interwar period, and the domination by Nazi and Soviet regimes post-1939. The book connects major themes and national histories, chronicling the region's evolution through revolutions, genocide, and struggles for democracy, leading to the contemporary rise of illiberal leaders who exploit longstanding fears.

“2449 - Our depiction of this future has a very 1920’s vibe. Everything from the fashion, to the cars, to the architecture, even the technology, feel decidedly less “futuristic.” While technology still plays an integral role in our story and the world, we have purposely toned it down substantially, instead choosing to focus on refining a few key innovations.” - Morgan Rosenblum “The goal was to create a unique and unusual future, one that might actually feel more like an alternate reality or vivid dream.” - Matthew Medney The year is 2449 - Abel Kane, an accomplished writer, witnesses a murder. But when he discovers the victim was a machine in a “skin suit”, his life is turned upside down. Its mere existence is either an anomaly or part of a surreptitious takeover. Soon Abel finds himself caught in the middle of a dangerous conspiracy. The more he investigates, the more he begins to fear he might be the only human left. Sometimes the only path forward is through the past. The earth is dying, and time travel is real. We have abused fossil fuels, leading to a self-inflicted extinction event. Our only hope lies with my team of Time Inflectors, who must travel back in time to save our futures. With limited crude oil and negligible primary fuel sources, carbon clouds signal the end of our species. We face two choices: leave the planet or fix it. As part of the TFA, a Canada-based agency, we discovered a revolutionary fifth Elemental force: Time. We built a time machine based on new physical sciences, aiming to return to the "inflection points" of this crisis to make changes. Ironically, the fuel required for our invention is the same that brought us here. With only enough for five time jumps, we face additional restrictions; time travel operates within a Quantum and Physical science framework that prevents paradoxes. This means interactions between future and present individuals are limited. I’m Doctor Malik Fikai, one of the three Inflectors assigned to rectify this mess before it’s too late. Our future depends on our ability to navigate the past and alter our fate.
