Hlavní postavou knihy je mladá žena, která se inteligencí a morální silou odlišuje od ostatních. Hlavními hrdinkami jsou sestry Marianne a Elinor Dashwoodovy, které mají ještě mladší sestru Margaret a staršího nevlastního bratra Johna. Na začátku románu pan Dashwood umírá a paní Dashwoodová se i s dcerami musí odstěhovat z rodinného sídla, které připadlo nejstaršímu synovi. S omezenými prostředky se paní Dashwoodová a její dcery usadí v malém venkovském domku, kde Marianne a Elinor prožívají své první lásky i zklamání. Marianne se řídí především svými city a své starší sestře Elinor, která má racionálnější pohled na svět, vyčítá chlad a rezervovanost. Ale nakonec zjistí, že rozum a cit se nemusí nutně vylučovat…

Třináct dopisů, které získalo Muzeum Jane Austenové, nám dává nahlédnout do soukromého i pracovního života této slavné a oblíbené anglické spisovatelky v letech 1801 až 1817. Dozvíme se něco z prostředí lázeňského města Bath, kde s rodinou pobývala až do roku 1805, kdy zemřel její otec. Její pozdější dopisy už jsou psány převážně z Chawtonu, kde s matkou, sestrou Cassandrou a Marthou Lloydovou žila téměř do své předčasné smrti. Najdeme v nich zajímavé i barvité postřehy z venkovského života, ale i mnohé poznámky týkající se vzniku a přijetí jejích děl, hlavně Pýchy a předsudku, Mansfieldského panství a Emmy. S těmito romány jsou spjaty i její pobyty v Londýně, kde dohlížela na jejich tisk a vydání. Vůbec nejdojemnější dopis, sepsaný pouhých pár dní po spisovatelčině smrti roku 1817, však pochází z pera její milované sestry Cassandry. Každý dopis je opatřen úvodem a poznámkami, které vysvětlují, co by dnešnímu čtenáři mohlo případně unikat.

Druhé pokračování třídílného románu přináší další osudy čtyř dcer pana Watsona – laskavé Elizabeth, krásné Emmy, marnivé Margaret a svéhlavé Penelopy. Po smrti reverenda Watsona se dívky stěhují k bratrovi Robertovi a jeho nelaskavé ženě Jane do Croydonu. Penelopa a Margaret usilují o manželství, zatímco Elizabeth nachází štěstí s ovdovělým Georgem Millarem. Emma, vzpomínající na pana Howarda, se snaží uniknout z domu, který se pro ni stává vězením. Její švagrová Jane si je vědoma její hodnoty jako guvernantky a brání jí v odchodu. Navzdory tomu se kolem Emmy objevují muži, kteří jí skládají hold. Na scénu přichází sir William Gordon, který miluje slečnu Osbornovou, směšný Alfred Freemantle a prohnaný doktor Morgan, jenž vymyslí lest, jak Emmě ublížit. Postavy z prvního dílu, včetně lord Osborneho a jeho rodiny, sledují dění z povzdálí, což zvyšuje očekávání na závěrečnou část. Emma se také setká se svým dosud neznámým bratrem Samem, jehož přítomnost jí přináší radost a vynahrazuje chlad Roberta, pod jehož ochranou se dívky nacházejí. I Robert však ukazuje náznaky citu.

V dobách, kdy ženy bývaly křehké květinky a mladé dívky často interesantně omdlévaly, vytvořila Jane Austenová ve své Emmě hrdinku z jiného kadlubu. Když v útlém mládí ztratí matku a na otce, slabošského hypochondra, nelze spoléhat, ujme se správy věcí na rodném panství sama a nároky, které na ni nelehká situace klade, vypěstují v bystré dívce vlastnosti suverénního generála. Jen ona všemu rozumí, jen ona ví, co je pro každého dobré. Tímto způsobem ovšem kráčí od maléru k maléru a často pěkně zavaří i těm, kterým upřímně chtěla pomoci. Ale protože jí nechybí dobré srdce, časem zmoudří a pochopí, kde hledat v životě ty pravé hodnoty. Román (v jeho filmovém zpracování ztvárnila Emmu oblíbená Gwyneth Paltrowová) zažívá v poslední době novou vlnu čtenářského zájmu. Je to snad tím, že dnešní ženy v jeho hrdince rozpoznávají předchůdkyně svého emancipačního úsilí o společenské uznání svých schopností i úskalí, jimž by se přitom měly vyhnout? Anebo je to prostě tak, že ctnosti a noblesa doby minulé nám i dnes v podání tak dobré autorky, jako je Jane Austenová, mají co říct?

„První moderní anglická autorka“ – „Mladší sestra Shakespearova“ – to jsou jen dva z mnoha lichotivých atributů, jimiž obdivovatelé vzdávají hold autorce, která už víc jak dvě století poutá neutuchající lásku vděčných čtenářů. Román, který jsme nazvali „Pýcha a přemlouvání“ vyšel posmrtně v roce 1818 pod názvem „Persuasion.“

Sestry Dashwoodovvy - Elinor, Marianna a Margaret - se po otcově smrti musí spolu s matkou odstěhovat z rodinného panství k vzdáleným příbuzným a žít v mnohem skromnějších podmínkách. Nejstarší z nich, rozvážná Elinor, navenek neprojevující city, a prostření, romanticky založená a impulzivní Marianna, prožívají nová přátelství a vztahy. Na vlastní kůži pocítí, že láska často naráží na společenské konvence a předsudky. Musí se nejednou smířit s krutou životní realitou a najít rovnováhu mezi tím, co káže rozum a co srdce.

Vzdělaná, citlivá a oduševnělá Anna byla zasnoubena s námořním kapitánem Frederickem Wentworthem. Její rodina však tento vztah označila za společensky nepřijatelný a Anna se musela své lásky vzdát. Po letech se s bývalým snoubencem znovu setkává a zjistí, že čas její city k němu nijak nezměnil...

Věnováno památce mé tety Jane Austenové. Pan Watson je ovdovělý vikář s početným potomstvem - dvěma syny a čtyřmi dcerami. Nejmladší z nich, Emma, byla vychována v rodině své bohaté tety, a je tudíž vzdělanější a jemnější než její sestry Elisabeth, Margaret a Penelope. Když však ovdoví i zmíněná teta a uzavře nerovný sňatek z lásky, je Emma nucena vrátit se do otcovského domu. Setkává se tam nejen s hypochondrickým a milujícím otcem, ale i s bezuzdným hledáním manžela, jímž své okolí obtěžují Margaret a Penelope. Tíhne tedy k nejstarší sestře Elisabeth, nepříliš inteligentní, avšak upřímné a oddané zbytku rodiny. V sousedství Watsonových žije šlechtická rodina Osbornových. Emma si získá nevítanou pozornost mladého lorda Osborna, zatímco Margaret doslova pronásleduje jeho bezohledného nohsleda Toma Musgravea. Ten se ovšem předvádí spíše před její švagrovou, urozenou a snobskou Jane, která přijela k Watsonovým na návštěvu, doprovázena manželem, hrubým Emminým bratrem Robertem. Blízké okolí však není prosto ani jiných mužů, a tak můžeme sledovat austenovské zahájení velké hry, při níž autorka i její následovnice pohybují figurkami na šachovnici děje s ironií i humorem. Románovou sérii Mladší sestra rozepsala pod názvem The Watsons Jane Austenová. Toto dílo dokončila její neteř Catherine Austenová Hubbacková, spisovatelka a strážkyně odkazu své velké tety.

Ve třetím a závěrečném díle se Emma vydává na cestu za štěstím, které se neustále vzdalují, i když je na dosah. Croydonský lékař pan Morgan, obletovaný pacientkami, si neuvědomuje, že Emma je výjimečná nejen krásou, ale i svým rozhledem a osobností. Na scénu přichází pastor Bridge se svou sestrou, kteří Emmě pomáhají uniknout z Morganových osidel a nelaskavého domova, kde vládne despotická švagrová Jane a její manžel Robert, advokát s chladným srdcem. Novomanželé Rosa a William Gordonovi také přinášejí vítané pozvání. Kontrasty se prohlubují – mezi šedí městských ulic a jarní přírodou v Burtonu, kde Emma nachází útočiště, nebo mezi cílevědomostí její sestry Margaret a Emminým idealismem. Tyto rozdíly naznačují blížící se finále, v němž se odhalují pravé tváře jednotlivých postav. Lord Osborne se mění z egoistického mladíka v citlivého ochránce, zatímco jeho sestra a její manžel zapomínají na společenské předsudky. Doktor Morgan, posedlý představou, že Emma miluje, zaplatí za svou obsesí vysokou cenu. Jen Emma a pan Howard zůstávají věrní svým opravdovým citům. První a druhá část románu ukazují, že dílo velké spisovatelky, dokončené její talentovanou neteří, zůstává živé a nyní vychází v prvním českém překladu.

Sedmnáctiletou Catherine uvedou příbuzní v lázeňském městečku poprvé do společnosti.Na jednom z plesů se seznámí s mladým pánem Tilneym ,který jí padne do oka.Naivní dáma čte hororové romány a ponoří se d strašidelných příběhů a její bujná fantazie ji připravuje vzrušující chvíle,když se noří do rolí hlavních hrdinů.Spřátelí se s Isabelou ,falešnou intrikánkou.Ale stále ji nejde z mysli mladý pan Tilney,který ji pozve k otci na opatství Northanger.

Mezi všemi spisovateli patří čestné místo Jane Austenové, která dokázala nahlédnout hluboko do lidských povah a svým bystrým postřehem i smyslem pro komiku baví čtenáře už dvě století. Výstižné a často neodolatelně vtipné výroky v této knížce pocházejí z jejích raných prací, zralých románů i soukromých dopisů. Vyvolávají úsměv, pobízejí k zamyšlení a vyvolávají obdiv k hlouboké autorčině moudrosti i k trefnosti její ironie. Jen málokdo popsal tu věčnou, delikátně složitou síť vztahů mezi majetkem a láskou tak chytře a zábavně jako Jane Austenová…

Vzácný dar tvůrčího nadání vedl pero pozdější slavné spisovatelky už v útlém věku dospívajícího děvčete. Povídky z tohoto výboru vznikaly v době, kdy si Jane Austenová na psaní vlastně teprve hrála. Překvapí však čtenáře nečekanou vyzrálostí: poznáváme v nich už autorku, která vidí svět kolem sebe otevřenýma očima, umí nahlédnout až na dno lidské duše a s humorem a ironií sobě vlastními nám svá poznání zprostředkuje. Kromě delšího náčrtu románu Catharine, neboli Altánek, Vás potěší čtrnáct textů, které i na velmi krátké ploše nezapřou autorčino mistrovství a její pověstnou ironii... Také juvenilie Charlotte Brontëové se až dosud nedočkaly českého vydání – a vzhledem ke kráse pohádkového příběhu Hledání štěstí, jejž napsala v pouhých třinácti letech, je to opravdu s podivem. Uvádíme také tři dojemné texty, věnované památce jejích sester Emily a Anne a pseudonymům Currer, Ellis a Acton Bell, pod nimiž tato sesterská trojice vydala svá první díla.

Novela v dopisech s názvem Lady Susan je jediným plně dokončeným dílem z pera Jane Austenové, které nebylo publikováno za jejího života. Podobně jako původní verze prvního publikovaného románu Rozum a cit (ještě pod názvem Elinor a Marianne) jde o relativně krátké dílo v dopisech. Jak již název napovídá, hlavní hrdinkou je sobecká vdova Lady Susan, která se snaží nalézt co nejvhodnějšího manžela nejen pro sebe, ale také pro svoji dceru (kterou ovšem nutí do sňatku s mužem, kterého nenávidí). Austenová rozpracovává charakteristiky postav prostřednictvím reakcí na dopisy, které dostávají, přičemž hlavní hybatelkou příběhu i emocí je právě Lady Susan, důmyslně měnící tón dopisů podle toho, komu jsou určeny. Hlavní hrdinka popírá klasické standardy romantických románů - hraje až neuvěřitelně aktivní roli, je krásná, inteligentní i vtipná a její nápadníci jsou mladší než je ona sama. Není také bez zajímavosti, že během námluv s případným manželem bez problémů flirtuje se ženatým mužem. A v závěru je k ní autorka dokonce výrazně shovívavější, než bychom očekávali...

V r. 1999 vyšlo pod názvem Romance u moře. Mladá a bystrá dívka Charlotta přijíždí strávit léto do přímořského městečka Sanditon. Brzy pronikne mezi místní smetánku - dobrosrdečné lidi i pokrytecké snoby, kteří by z ospalého Sanditonu rádi vybudovali věhlasné lázně. Během dopoledních vycházek a odpoledních čajových sedánků, jež často představují jediné povyražení, jaké může městečko nabídnout, se Charlotta seznamuje také s lázeňskými hosty. Poznává sira Edwarda, žvanivého seladona se šlechtickým titulem, krásnou a tajemnou dívku Kláru, která dělá společnici pohádkově bohaté a vrtošivé lady Denhamové, hypochondrické sourozence Parkerovy, podivína Henryho, jenž se přijel léčit do Sanditonu z nešťastné lásky... A protože je Charlotta vybavena neobyčejnou inteligencí, pozorovacím talentem a smyslem pro ironii, dokáže pod slupkou nudných lázeňských dní vidět strhující dramata. Jedno z nich se rozpoutá přímo v jejím srdci, když se objeví muž, díky němuž Charlotta pozná dosud neznámý cit – lásku...

Prohnaná, ale smolařská intrikánka Laura, věčně opilá Alice, marnivá a hloupá Mary, potrhlá Eliza, drzá Cassandra... Láska a přátelství, novela v dopisech, bývá občas zaměňována s obdobným dílem Jane Austenové: s Lady Susan. Přispívá k tomu nejen stejná literární forma, ale také film Láska a přátelství, který navzdory názvu vychází právě z Lady Susan. „Naše“ kniha, tedy Láska a přátelství, je však samostatným dílkem světoznámé autorky, pozoruhodným už tím, že je psala mezi jedenáctým a čtrnáctým rokem svého věku. Snad právě díky mládí, které bývá bezohledné, se v něm vysmála mnohým klišé romantické literatury: jmenujme jen „scény plné omdlévání“, „nečekaná zjevení dosud neznámých příbuzných“, „vznešené city versus přízemní realita“ či „povinný odpor proti rodičovskému despotismu“. Nad tím vším se vznáší nepřekonatelná ironie Jane Austenové, její břitký humor – ale také city, vášeň a láska, byť podané tak, že občas nevíme, zda se smát, či plakat. Smích je každopádně na místě, vždyť autorka psala tyto fiktivní dopisy pro pobavení rodinného kruhu; i tak ale budete líčení krásné, nesnázemi stíhané Laury číst se zatajeným dechem a neubráníte se obdivu vůči vypravěčským schopnostem mladinké Jane, která se později stala jednou z nejoblíbenějších a nejuznávanějších spisovatelek všech dob.

Emma Watsonová vyrůstala u své tety, a když se v devatenácti letech vrátí zpět do svého rodiště, vzbudí to rozruch. Z Emmy vyrostla krásná, inteligentní a charismatická slečna na vdávání, která u dam jitří závist a u mužů rozviřuje zájem. Jenže Emma si do života nechce nechat mluvit a je odhodlaná rozhodnout se bez ohledu na rady okolí, i kdyby její volba měla být některým trnem v oku... Novelu Watsonovi začala psát Jane Austenová v roce 1804, zamýšlela ji rozpracovat do rozsáhlého románu, ale nakonec ji nedokončila. O dokončení se později pokusilo několik autorek, z nichž k těm úspěšným patřila L. Oultonová, jejíž verzi završení příběhu Emmy Watsonové jsme pro toto vydání vybrali.

Na počátku našeho příběhu jsou sestry Dashwoodovy nuceny opustit dům, v němž vyrůstaly, a přestěhovat se na tajemný ostrov plný divokých příšer a neblahých záhad. Zvítězí sestry Dashwoodovy nad panovačnými matkami rodin i bezohlednými piráty a naleznou pravou lásku? Nebo padnou za oběť chapadlům příšer, která se jim neustále plazí v patách?
