In Paris formierte sich 1888 die Künstlergruppe der Nabis, der Propheten, wie sie sich selbst scherzhaft nannten. Zu ihren Mitgliedern zählten Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, Félix Vallotton und Aristide Maillol. Auf der Suche nach neuen, 'echten' Ausdrucksformen gestalteten sie intime Interieurs, Bühnenbilder, Theaterplakate, Zeitschriften, Bücher, Möbel oder Kunsthandwerk. Kunst und Leben sollten einander durchdringen, so die Maxime der jungen Maler, die das Leben auf den Boulevards und hinter den Türen der Boudoirs in atmosphärisch dichten Bildern festhielten. Dem Vorbild Paul Gauguins folgend, komponierten sie Bilder aus dichten, stark konturierten Farbflächen, die sie durch dunkle Striche strukturierten. Die Textur der Oberfläche wurde selbst zum Protagonisten.
