One might say that Athens is the city of cities? the cradle of democracy, science and occidental philosophy, it has once again become a focal point? albeit for European crisis and criticism. Seen as a point of culmination or turning point, crisis is a moment of in-depth deliberation and new departures. Athens can thus be regarded as a European starting point and arena. Wolfgang Lehrner?s idea of 'Metro/Polis' is to think beyond the real urban situation with all of its principles. A fictitious aspect comes into play. Starting out from his home city of Vienna, Wolfgang Lehrner has spent the last few years traveling through cities that are no further away than a one-day bus trip from Vienna, and which share common ground with the city in terms of their historical, cultural, economic and transportation aspects. The result: a range of photos and videos of cities that are not immediately placeable at first glance. It is only on closer inspection that complex connections become visible in the seemingly simple, everyday images. Wolfgang Lehrner's works are cosmopolitan investigations that focus on and examine the changes and significance of commonalities and contrasts between urban spaces, metropolises and their interlinking in the cultural, socio-economic, historic and metaphysical sense. The observation and visualization of locally determined peculiarities of cities and their intervening spaces and the global transformability that results from this are a thread that runs through Wolfgang Lehrner's works. The observer of the images, videos and installations becomes an author, a detective, who must place the views of the cities for him or herself.
