Middle Babylonian Texts in the Cornell Collections, Part 2
    • This volume completes the publication of Middle Babylonian texts from the Rosen Collection, focusing on the Kassite period, a project initiated by Wilfred H. van Soldt in 2015. Elena Devecchi presents full transliterations, translations, and extensive commentaries on 338 previously unpublished cuneiform tablets from Kassite Babylonia (ca. 1475-1155 BCE). Most texts are dated to the reigns of Nazi-Maruttas and Kadasman-Turgu, with additional tablets from Burna-Burias II and a few from Kadasman-Enlil II, Kudur-Enlil, and Sagarakti-Surias, along with undated documents. The tablets primarily consist of administrative records related to the income, storage, and redistribution of agricultural products, animal husbandry, and textile production, while legal documents and letters make up a smaller portion. Evidence indicates these documents originated from an administrative center closely linked to the provincial capital Nippur, likely located nearby. This collection significantly enhances our understanding of the Nippur region during Kassite rule, expanding knowledge previously based almost solely on sources from Nippur itself. It provides substantial new data for studying key aspects of society, economy, and administration in Kassite Babylonia.
