Ernst Meyer war ein bedeutender Akteur der Kommunistischen Partei Deutschlands während der Weimarer Republik. Als Schüler von Rosa Luxemburg und Gründungsmitglied des Spartakusbundes spielte er eine zentrale Rolle in der Novemberrevolution und war nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg Mitglied der KPD-Zentrale sowie von 1921 bis 1922 Parteivorsitzender. Meyer, ein Verfechter revolutionärer Realpolitik, trug maßgeblich zur Entwicklung der kommunistischen Einheitsfrontstrategie bei. Er setzte sich leidenschaftlich für innerparteiliche Demokratie ein, insbesondere gegenüber der Führung um Ruth Fischer und später dem Thälmann-Zentralkomitee.
