Tragicky laděný román význačného amerického spisovatele o milostném příběhu mladé Italky a amerického důstojníka, jehož těžká choroba odsuzuje k brzké smrti. Děj se odehrává v Benátkách a je soustředěn do několika dní na konci druhé světové války.

Jediná divadelní hra Hemingwayova je výrazem jeho sympatie k republikánskému Španělsku. Napsal ji v r. 1937 za španělské občanské války v Madridě uprostřed výbuchů pum. Sám o ní řekl, že „jedná jenom o madridské kontrašpionáži a obsahuje-li nějaké mravní naučení, pak to, že lidé,kteří pracují pro jisté organizace, mají velmi málo času na domácký život“.

Stejnojmenná povídka dala jméno souboru textů, z nichž mnohé jsou publikovány v češtině poprvé a jež spojuje téma: Španělsko, býčí zápasy a býci. A snad ještě více ústřední myšlenka Hemingwayovy tvorby: „Člověka lze zničit, ale ne porazit.“ Sbírka vůbec poprvé klade vedle sebe Hemingwayovy texty žurnalistické a beletristické. Překvapí tím, jak blízko k sobě mají. Hemingway novinář nepřestává být vtipným a dynamickým vypravěčem, jenž naplňuje reportáže poutavými mikropříběhy, Hemingway spisovatel si uchovává tolikrát marně napodobovaný „objektivní“ styl bystrého, střízlivého a zdánlivě nezúčastněného reportéra. V první části líčí autor tragiku jeho rodinného života, ve druhé zavádí na Kubu v době 2. světové války, kdy se hrdina aktivně účastní boje proti německému námořnictvu. Dějištěm poslední části románu je paluba průzkumného člunu, ve kterém hrdina pátrá po trosečnících z potopené německé ponorky. Kniha zaznamenává řadu Hemingwayových autentických zážitků z 2. světové války, kdy byl ve službách amerického námořnictva, a do postavy svého hrdiny vložil mnoho svých tehdejších pocitů a názorů Poslední dílo z autorovy pozůstalosti je tragickým příběhem malíře, žijícího osaměle na jednom z ostrovů Západoindického souostroví.

Autorova románová prvotina (1926), vycházející také pod názvem Fiesta, bývá považována za jedno z jeho nejdůležitějších děl. Začíná jako nekonečný tah po pařížských barech, jako večírek, který začne už ráno a nikdy neskončí… Jenže nejde o výraz nevázaného života, ale spíše o náplast na děsivou minulost. Hemingwayovi „ztracení hrdinové“ tu prožívají možná horší věci než v zákopech. Jejich život je poznamenán deziluzí, smutkem a depresí. Ani všechny bary od Paříže po Madrid nemůžou utišit palčivost ztrát a neustálý neklid.

Děj románu, soustředěný na tři až čtyři dny, se odehrává v druhém roce občanské války ve Španělsku. Američan Robert Jordan, člen mezinárodní brigády, je pověřen důležitým úkolem, který má zajistit úspěch chystané republikánské ofenzívě. Na charakterech několika republikánů,s nimiž se hrdina románu setkává při zajišťování akce, je zobrazeno celé tehdejší revoluční Španělsko se všemi problémy, úspěchy i zmatky. Autor se sám zúčastnil jako korespondent občanské války ve Španělsku na straně republikánů.

Ernest Hemingway zde popsal své válečné zkušenosti. Je to autobiografický román. Protiválečný román, ve kterém se prolínají hrůzy první světové války s tragickým příběhem lásky italského dobrovolníka a anglické ošetřovatelky.

A na historii spisovatele Richarda Gordona, složitého intelektuála, na hony vzdáleného skutečnému životu. Hemingway svým strhujícím vyprávěním tak konfrontuje dva světy - svět těch co mají, a svět těch, co nemají. Není třeba říkat, že Hemingwayovy sympatie jsou na straně chudých a jejich bojů, kdežto prázdná společnost boháčů vyvolává jeho odpor. I když je příběh Harryho Morgana příběhem životního ztroskotance, je to zároveň příběh člověka, který se rve se životem. Jeho boj je osamocený a proto beznadějný. Ale v čtenáři zanechává pocit mužné síly a nezdolné odvahy k překonávání životních překážek.
