V Povídkách jako by se promítal celý autorův život – od let dětství a dospívání, od tragických zkušeností generace, která prožila první světovou válku, po historie z loveckých výprav a zachycení lidských reakcí v kritických momentech na frontě či v zázemí, uprostřed býčí arény nebo při nejrůznějších životních situacích. A tak se v povídkách ocitáme uprostřed Afriky pod zasněženými vrcholy Kilimandžára i v lesích Michiganu, na italské frontě i v poválečné Francii, ve Španělsku i ve Wyomingu, a stále nás provází autorův vnímavý pohled, kterým své hrdiny často staví do mezních situací.

Tragicky laděný román význačného amerického spisovatele o milostném příběhu mladé Italky a amerického důstojníka, jehož těžká choroba odsuzuje k brzké smrti. Děj se odehrává v Benátkách a je soustředěn do několika dní na konci druhé světové války.

Jediná divadelní hra Hemingwayova je výrazem jeho sympatie k republikánskému Španělsku. Napsal ji v r. 1937 za španělské občanské války v Madridě uprostřed výbuchů pum. Sám o ní řekl, že „jedná jenom o madridské kontrašpionáži a obsahuje-li nějaké mravní naučení, pak to, že lidé,kteří pracují pro jisté organizace, mají velmi málo času na domácký život“.

Stejnojmenná povídka dala jméno souboru textů, z nichž mnohé jsou publikovány v češtině poprvé a jež spojuje téma: Španělsko, býčí zápasy a býci. A snad ještě více ústřední myšlenka Hemingwayovy tvorby: „Člověka lze zničit, ale ne porazit.“ Sbírka vůbec poprvé klade vedle sebe Hemingwayovy texty žurnalistické a beletristické. Překvapí tím, jak blízko k sobě mají. Hemingway novinář nepřestává být vtipným a dynamickým vypravěčem, jenž naplňuje reportáže poutavými mikropříběhy, Hemingway spisovatel si uchovává tolikrát marně napodobovaný „objektivní“ styl bystrého, střízlivého a zdánlivě nezúčastněného reportéra. Románový triptych, jehož pojítkem je postava úspěšného malíře Thomase Hudsona. Stejně jako se děj knihy odehrává na jednotlivých ostrovech v Atlantickém oceánu a na Antilách v oblasti Golfského proudu, představují tři části románu jakési ostrovy uprostřed života hlavního.

Autorova románová prvotina (1926), vycházející také pod názvem Fiesta, bývá považována za jedno z jeho nejdůležitějších děl. Začíná jako nekonečný tah po pařížských barech, jako večírek, který začne už ráno a nikdy neskončí… Jenže nejde o výraz nevázaného života, ale spíše o náplast na děsivou minulost. Hemingwayovi „ztracení hrdinové“ tu prožívají možná horší věci než v zákopech. Jejich život je poznamenán deziluzí, smutkem a depresí. Ani všechny bary od Paříže po Madrid nemůžou utišit palčivost ztrát a neustálý neklid.

Děj románu, soustředěný na tři až čtyři dny, se odehrává v druhém roce občanské války ve Španělsku. Američan Robert Jordan, člen mezinárodní brigády, je pověřen důležitým úkolem, který má zajistit úspěch chystané republikánské ofenzívě. Na charakterech několika republikánů,s nimiž se hrdina románu setkává při zajišťování akce, je zobrazeno celé tehdejší revoluční Španělsko se všemi problémy, úspěchy i zmatky. Autor se sám zúčastnil jako korespondent občanské války ve Španělsku na straně republikánů.

Ernest Hemingway v tomto románu čerpá ze svých vlastních válečných zážitků a přináší autobiografický příběh, který zachycuje hrůzy první světové války. Román Mít a nemít vznikl v třicátých letech, v době hospodářské krize, která dotvářela autorův pohled na společenské problémy. Hemingway se k námětu několikrát vracel, původně ve dvou povídkách, a stopy tohoto postupu na příběhu zůstaly. Skládá se z vyprávění několika osob a rozpadá se na dvě části: na příběh Harryho Morgana, pevného, statečného muže jenž však v daných podmínkách nemůže bojovat o svou existenci jinak než mimo zákon. A na historii spisovatele Richarda Gordona, složitého intelektuála, na hony vzdáleného skutečnému životu. Hemingway svým strhujícím vyprávěním tak konfrontuje dva světy - svět těch co mají, a svět těch, co nemají. Není třeba říkat, že Hemingwayovy sympatie jsou na straně chudých a jejich bojů, kdežto prázdná společnost boháčů vyvolává jeho odpor. I když je příběh Harryho Morgana příběhem životního ztroskotance, je to zároveň příběh člověka, který se rve se životem. Jeho boj je osamocený a proto beznadějný. Ale v čtenáři zanechává pocit mužné síly a nezdolné odvahy k překonávání životních překážek.

Román z autorovy pozůstalosti zpracovává jeho zážitky a dojmy z afrického safari. Román kolísající mezi autobiografií a fikcí vypráví příběh lovce, zodpovědného za vedení loveckého tábora. Ten se musí vyrovnávat s hrozbou, že tábor bude napaden znesvářenými domorodými kmeny, ale zároveň chce pomoci své ženě Mary při lovu na lva. Román vyniká nádhernými popisy africké krajiny a líčením vzrušujícího lovu zvěře, pochopením pro sílu přátelství i krásu krajiny a mentalitu místních lidí.

Román čerpající z dramatu první světové války napsal autor v roku 1929 na základě vlastních zážitků z italské fronty. Osou mistrného vyprávění, odvíjejícího se na plasticky zachyceném pozadí otřesných válečných zážitků, je tragický milostný příběh amerického sanitního dobrovolníka a anglické ošetřovatelky z italské fronty a později ze Švýcarska. Pátý svazek Spisů Ernesta Hemingwaye přináší dvě díla z poválečné tvorby autora. Ernest Hemingway never wished to be widely known as a poet. He concentrated on writing short stories and novels, for which he won the Nobel Prize in 1956. But his poetry deserves close attention, if only because it is so revealing. Through verse he expressed anger and disgust—at Dorothy Parker and Edmund Wilson, among others. He parodied the poems and sensibilities of Rudyard Kipling, Joyce Kilmer, Robert Graves, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Gertrude Stein. He recast parts of poems by the likes of Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot, giving them his own twist. And he invested these poems with the preoccupations of his novels: sex and desire, battle and aftermath, cats, gin, and bullfights. Nowhere is his delight in drubbing snobs and overrefined writers more apparent. In this revised edition of the Complete Poems , the editor, Nicholas Gerogiannis, offers here an afterword assessing the influence of the collection, first published in 1979, and an updated bibliography. Readers will be particularly interested in the addition of "Critical Intelligence," a poem written soon after Hemingway's divorce from his first wife in 1927.
