Herman Melvilles »Moby Dick oder Der Wal« von 1851 gilt als einer größten Klassiker der Weltliteratur. Jeder kennt die schicksalhafte Fahrt des Walfangschiffes Pequod, dessen Kapitän Ahab mit blindem Hass den weißen Pottwal Moby Dick jagt, der ihm ein Bein abgerissen hat. Doch bereits 1839 erschien von Jeremiah N. Reynolds (1799–1858) in der New Yorker Zeitschrift »The Knickerbocker« der Artikel »Mocha Dick: or The White Whale of the Pacific«. Er beschreibt darin die Jagd auf einen weißen Wal, der häufig vor der chilenischen Insel Mocha vor der Küste gesichtet wurde und deshalb »Mocha Dick« genannt wurde. Die darin beschriebenen Einzelheiten ähneln teilweise denen von Melvilles Roman so sehr, dass davon auszugehen ist, dass Melville den Text als Grundlage für seinen bekanntesten Roman verwendete.
