Wer sich an Episoden aus Bulgakows »Meister und Margarita« erinnert fühlt, liegt ganz richtig. Doch Ak Welsapar, in Schweden lebender turkmenischer Schriftsteller, legt noch eine Schippe drauf. Eine Kobra will sich an den Menschen rächen, die ihren Lebensraum auf der Jagd nach Öl und Gas vernichten. Kobra, der Schlangerich, nimmt Menschengestalt an. Welsapar hat mit »Kobra« eine turbulente, beißende Satire auf die neuen Diktatoren »des demokratischen Postkommunismus« geschaffen, deftige Szenen wechseln zu slapstickartiger Herrscherlyrik; und doch ist das kein orientalisches Märchen. »Eine großartige Lektüre für jeden, der sich für die Psychologie von Despoten interessiert«, urteilt »World Literature Today«. Auch in Russland (2005) und der Ukraine (2021) wurde der Roman von der Kritik gefeiert. In Turkmenistan sind Welsapars Werke verboten, seit 2022 auch seine Romane in Russland.
