While cleaning her father’s home after his death, Gwenaëlle Aubry found a handwritten manuscript titled The Melancholic Black Sheep, with a note to "novelize." The crossed-out subtitle, An Inconvenient Specter, referred to her father's debilitating bipolar disorder. Aubry always intended to write about him, and his passing, along with his words, provided the chance to explore his many absences, even when he was physically present, and to reshape her memories. This work portrays a man without a true self—a once-respected lawyer who envisioned himself in various roles, ultimately becoming a drifter and frequent mental institution visitor. Through the alternating voices of daughter and father, this fictional memoir unfolds in dictionary form, revealing the many identities behind the masks he wore. Each letter introduces a different aspect of his persona: A for Antonin Artaud, B for James Bond, H for homeless, and Z for Zelig, the character who could adapt to those around him. Letter by letter, Aubry reconstructs the father who had long eluded her. The narrative serves as a beautifully written exploration of mental illness and its broader implications for understanding human experience.
