Known as the "king of renunciates," Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye (1813-1899) transformed Buddhism by collecting and disseminating various Tibetan lineage traditions across sectarian lines. His extensive treasury collections of profound teachings continue to be transmitted throughout the Himalayas by all major traditions, showcasing the depth of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and practice. A polymath, dedicated retreatant, writer, and teacher from the eastern Tibetan kingdom of Dergé, Jamgon Kongtrul emerged during a time of significant sectarian and political divides in the nineteenth century. Alongside Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo and Chokgyur Lingpa, he focused on preserving declining lineages, creating a conservation project that transcended traditional Tibetan "school" divides.
