Born in war-torn Afghanistan, Waheed Arian's earliest memories are filled with the sounds of bombs. Fleeing the conflict with his family, he spent much of his childhood in refugee camps in Pakistan, often living in cramped conditions without basic sanitation or education. After contracting tuberculosis, he recognized the transformative power of medicine and resolved to dedicate his life to healing others. Despite having nothing, Waheed taught himself from textbooks bought from street vendors and learned English through the BBC World Service. At fifteen, he was smuggled to the UK with just $100 and initially found work in a shop, where he was advised to aim for a career as a taxi driver. However, he aspired to much more. Battling PTSD and anxiety, he studied tirelessly and earned acceptance to study medicine at prestigious institutions like Cambridge University, Imperial College, and Harvard, eventually becoming a doctor in the NHS. Yet, he sought to make an even greater impact. In 2015, he founded Arian Teleheal, a groundbreaking charity that connects doctors in war zones and low-resource countries with their counterparts in developed nations. Through collaboration, they save and transform lives—millions of lives like Waheed's. This memoir is a powerful story of courage, ambition, and resilience against all odds.
