In a rollicking supernatural detective thriller set in 1909 Boston, Artie Quick, a sales assistant at Filene’s, moonlights as an amateur detective. Ambitious and unorthodox, she works by day in women's accessories while disguising herself as a man to study Criminal Investigation at the YMCA's Evening Institute for Younger Men. Eager to apply her knowledge, Artie seeks out mysteries to solve, enlisting the help of her friend Theodore, an upper-crust bachelor fascinated by Boston's occult scene and the study of magic. Their investigation begins on Boston Common, where rumors of unearthly screams circulate among tramps and groundskeepers. As they delve deeper, they uncover a series of violent abductions that lead them from the heights of power to the depths of an unfinished mass transit tunnel. The duo faces challenges, including Theodore's attempts at magic and the true purpose of Artie's disguise. They must confront an ancient, deranged evil that preys on the vulnerable, testing their resolve and courage in a city rife with danger. Will they succeed in their quest against this formidable horror?
